Well, i can say that my new 2002 tundra will make some engine noise at startup, (very slight tapping) on a very cold morning. It will not turn over, but it does click when i turn the key. The tensioner can allow cam chain noise during start up until the tensioner makes adjustments.

It would happen most usually after a drive (warm eng temp) or when cold. I searched the archives for key words like ping, knock, etc and am still scratching my head. For a period of time, an incorrect lubricant was used.

The sound you are describing could be the serpintine belt tensioner, i have a 2000 had to have it replaced, it was making the same sound, like a light rattle noise, the tensioner is spring loaded and tends to lose tension causing the rattle, pinging sound. I don't know if you'd hear the sound of valves hitting pistons, but it died very quietly. I have a 2002 tundra limited with the 4.7l. Newer toyota's use a tinming chain and hydraulic tensioner using oil pressure.
